This website was part of my final Thesis for the MSc Design and Digital Media degree. DE SIGN explores the world of modern design and the influential progress the movements of de stijl, bauhaus and constructivism marked throughout last century forming the defining history of design. DE SIGN is an interactive which applies the theories regarding typography, three dimensions, space and time avant-garde artists such as Theo van Doesburg produced in the inspiring period of 1917 - 1935. DE SIGN as a visual guide has also an educational purpose for people interested in modern design. Through the exploration of different nodes and tag clouds users can identify linkages and correlations between isms, styles, past and present, the pioneers of an epoch.
The name DE SIGN I gave to my project, comes from the separation of the word design on its original etymological derivations (prefix de followed by the latin verb singlare). From this separation the word sign emerges, provoking us to question if design still has the capacity to be meaningful, or if it has simply transformed into a set of signs with a sub-meaning attached. In addition, DE SIGN is a reference to the Dutch movement of De Stijl, which in English, means The Style.
DE SIGN is a project which is still in progress as I keep searching for new correlations, new nodes making the content richer.
